Questions for Calgary Transit
Dear Calgary Transit,
I am eight years old and I love trains and buses. I have some questions about Calgary Transit buses that I am really wondering about. I hope you can answer them for me! Thank you very much. I have made this whole website myself, but my mom helped me to type the text on this page.
1. We would like to find out how different buses end up on different routes, so we can know when we can expect to see them. Is there any way to tell, or is it just a surprise every day? For example: when will the 1995 New Flyer D40LF come past our house? (You can find out about the 1995 New Flyer D40LF here.) We live on the 17 Ramsay route.
2. We also wonder whether bus drivers always work on the same routes, or do they get to change around sometimes so they don't get bored. Sometimes we see the same drivers, and sometimes we see new drivers we don't know yet! Does the kind of bus that comes down our street, depend on the driver who is working on the route that day?
3. Can you tell us a list of the different kinds of buses in the fleet? I would really like to know about the kind of things that make each bus unique. Here are the buses I already know:

Blue Buses
1995 New Flyer D40LF: The route information is written in green writing, not orange like most of the buses. It has a curved exhaust pipe on top. And it has a window at the back of the bus. We have only seen a few of these special buses and we think they are quite rare. Right now we think there is one on the 24 Ogden route. We have also noticed a couple going down 9th Avenue in Inglewood. It looks like it is an old bus.
We have been trying to get a good picture of the window on the back of that bus for a long time and we finally got one just about a week ago!!! Here it is:

1996-1999 New Flyer D40LF : It is the same as the Window Bus (green writing and curved exhaust pipe on top), but without a window at the back.
Mystery Bus: It is a blue, purple and white bus just like the ones mentioned above (it doesn't have a window at the back) - but instead of a curved exhaust pipe, it has a regular straight exhaust pipe like the red buses! We have only seen a bus like this twice. It must be very rare!!! It's number is 7678
Here is my picture of the MCI Classic. I only saw these buses at the Oliver Bowen Maintenance facility at Doors Open Calgary.
Regular blue, purple & white bus with a straight exhaust pipe: We know there are a lot of these so we don`t have any pictures of them because they are not as special.
Red Buses
We know there are a few kinds of red buses.
This is a 2014 New Flyer XD40 . We are amazed that it has been coming right past our house in the evening! This is a big change.
Pictures of the Eldorado-E-Z Rider. We love this bus! They Don't use them anymore though.

More Questions
When buses get repaired or tuned up, can the mechanics use parts from different kinds of buses in the fleet, to fix them? Could they put an old curved exhaust pipe on a new red bus, instead of a skinny new curved exhaust pipe like the ones we see on new articulated buses+new buses (or any kind of bus that's new) ?
How long will the older blue buses stay in the fleet? We hope they will be here for a very very very very very long time! Thanks for reading my bus questions! |
Articulated bus. (new)
I have only ridden in a new articulated bus. I have never ridden in the old kind yet (the kind that has seats right inside the articulation). |
